How breast cancer starts and grows
They also change as we get older, for example by becoming softer. Breast cancer that has not spread beyond the breast or armpit is known as primary, or early, breast cancer. They may also spread to other areas of the body where they can form new tumours, called secondary breast cancer.
Breast cancer usually begins within the lobes. You have different cells for different parts of your body — for example skin cells look and work differently from liver cells. The breast and armpit also contain lymph nodes and vessels carrying lymph fluid, which are part of the immune system.
